The disease of perfection
È sempre più diffuso tra i giovani, e non solo, l’ossessione per la propria immagine, che si traduce in un’illusoria ricerca della perfezione.
Le persone che hanno una certa fragilità nella propria auto-percezione, perché si vedono inadeguati, brutti, difettosi, possono soffrire di quella che viene chiamata dismorfofobia: una percezione alterata di sé in senso negativo.
The consequence is the sick search for a non-existent perfection: many become competitive, live by confrontation, experience frustration, sometimes reaching depression. The compulsive and continuous use of filters to post one's images on social networks probably denounces a serious difficulty in accepting one's image.
Even if we don't have this relationship with social media, dysmorphophobia can manifest itself in many other ways. In less significant forms, we too can worry about wanting to show a perfect image of ourselves, not necessarily on an aesthetic level, but perhaps in our skills, in our way of life, in our ability to manage situations.
We are all imperfect
Le letture di questa domenica possono essere al contrario un invito a riconoscere il nostro valore e le nostre potenzialità anche quando non siamo perfetti, quando ci rendiamo conto che abbiamo dei limiti e che possiamo ancora crescere su alcuni aspetti.
Both in the text of theActs of the Apostlesthat in the verses of theGospel of Matthewin fact, we are given the image of God who trusts us as we are, even with our imperfections.
Wobbly
The first imperfection image is rendered from the text of theGospel of Matthew con un numero: i discepoli sono undici, manca un pezzo, non c’è più quel numero simmetrico e così significativo per la vita di Israele che è il numero dodici.
La scena fotografa un gruppo che ha vissuto una defezione, un gruppo che ha fatto l’esperienza del proprio limite. Nonostante questo, i discepoli non usano un filtro per fingere di essere sempre dodici. No, qualcosa è avvenuto, modificando l’immagine della prima comunità.
Not surprisingly, the text of theActs of the Apostles registra un tentativo di aggiustamento da parte dei discepoli: chiedono infatti a Gesù se sia quello il tempo in cui ricostruirà il Regno di Israele.
In fact, they realize that that number eleven is no longer suitable for their dreams of glory, they hope for an intervention from Providence to fix what went wrong.
Ambiguous and undecided
La seconda immagine di imperfezione è resa dal Vangelo attraverso l’accostamento di due verbi che descrivono l’atteggiamento dei discepoli: prima si prostrano, poi dubitano (Mt 28,17).
Siamo noi, con i nostri cammini imperfetti. Ci prostriamo, un po’ perché siamo convinti, un po’ perché lo fanno gli altri, un po’ perché lo sentiamo.
But as we prostrate, we are already doubting. We don't trust ourselves, we don't trust God. In our life there are always traits of hypocrisy, we are never definitively consistent with ourselves.
A space for the Spirit
Despite these evident traits of imperfection, what is striking is that the Lord still entrusts to this shaky, incredulous, distrustful community the mission of announcing the Kingdom of God.
L’imperfezione diventa il vuoto che lo Spirito santo riempie. Quando ci riteniamo perfetti, ci illudiamo di bastare a noi stessi, il nostro io pervade ogni spazio, non c’è posto per lo Spirito.
When we recognize ourselves as limited, inadequate and incapable, the heart opens to welcome the strength that comes from God. What is important therefore is to avoid covering the imperfection with the filters of resignation or, on the contrary, with the strenuous attempt to do everything alone. Imperfection is faced by allowing itself to be filled by the Spirit.
Let yourself be accompanied
If we were perfect and self-sufficient we would not need to be accompanied by Jesus. The Lord would have nothing to do with us. And instead it is precisely our inadequacy that makes Jesus pronounce reassuring words: "I am with you always, until the end of the world" (Mt 28.20). He is Emmanuel, the one who never leaves us, like a mother who accompanies her child's hand, because she knows that, if she took that hand away, the child would only do scribbles. In fact, sometimes he even allows us to make these doodles, perhaps just when we risk thinking we don't need him.

Ora i discepoli possono andare ad annunciare, perché sono diventati consapevoli della loro imperfezione. Andranno a raccontare come il Signore ha operato nelle loro vite storte e traballanti.
Non annunciano se stessi e i propri meriti o le proprie capacità, ma testimoniano la grandezza di Dio, che sarà tanto più evidente quanto più povere saranno state le loro vite.
This should be the awareness of the Church: sent with our limitations, entrusted forever to the One who walks with us!
