Blessed Virgin Mary of Loreto: the complete story

The Shrine ofHoly Houseis located in Loreto (AN): it is a popular place of pilgrimage where Catholics venerate theVirgin of Loreto.         

It is the most important Marian sanctuary in Italy; inside is kept theHoly Houseof Nazareth where, according to devotional tradition, the Virgin Mary received the Annunciation.

Saint John Paul II

The Blessed John Paul II(Karol Józef Wojtyła, 1978-2005), referring to theHoly House di Loreto, fece la seguente riflessione :

«Quello Lauretano è un Santuario mirabile. In esso è inscritta la trentennale esperienza di condivisione, che Gesù fece con Maria e Giuseppe. Attraverso questo mistero umano e divino, nella casa di Nazaret è come inscritta la storia di tutti gli uomini, poiché ogni uomo è legato ad una “casa”, dove nasce, lavora, riposa, incontra gli altri e la storia di ogni uomo, è segnata in modo particolare da una casa: la casa della sua infanzia, dei suoi primi passi nella vita.

Ed è eloquente ed importante per tutti che quest’Uomo unico e singolare, che è il Figlio unigenito di Dio, abbia pure voluto legare la sua storia ad una casa, quella di Nazaret, che secondo il racconto evangelico, ospitò Gesù di Nazaret lungo l’intero arco della sua infanzia, adolescenza e giovinezza, cioè della sua misteriosa maturazione umana […]. La casa del Figlio dell’uomo è dunque la casa universale di tutti i figli adottivi di Dio. La storia di ogni uomo, in un certo senso, passa attraverso quella casa [...]."

There "House of the Madonna” era formata da tre pareti addossate ad una grotta scavata nella roccia (che si trova nella Basilica dell’Annunciazione a Nazaret). La tradizione popolare racconta che nella notte tra il 9 ed il 10 dicembre del 1294 le pietre della casa di Nazaret vennero trasportate in volo dagli angeli. In realtà, alcuni studi, e dei documenti ritrovati, hanno confermato che il trasporto avvenne per mare su navi crociate.

In fact, after the expulsion of Christians from the Holy Land by the Muslims, a member of the Angeli family, rulers of Epirus (region of north-western Greece), took an interest in saving the Holy House from certain ruin, which was, therefore, transported first to Tersatto (today's Croatia), in 1291, and then to Loreto on 10 December 1294.

Fin dall’inizio del Trecento fu già meta di pellegrinaggio anche per quanti, prendendo la strada costiera, erano diretti a S. Michele al Gargano oppure in Terrasanta; il flusso nei secoli XV e XVI diventò enorme fino ad indurre, nel 1520, Papa Leone X ad equiparare il voto dei pellegrini del Santuario di Loreto a quello di Gerusalemme che, già man mano, Loreto aveva sostituito nelle punte dei grandi pellegrinaggi penitenziali, che vedevano Roma, Santiago di Compostela, Gerusalemme.

Prodigy

Starting from the 15th century, the striking prodigy of the translation of the Holy House also attracted the pilgrimage of kings and queens, princes, cardinals and popes, who left gifts or votive offerings for graces received; they were later joined by leaders, poets, writers, inventors, founders of religious orders, philosophers, artists and over 200 future saints and blesseds.

The studies carried out on the stones of the Holy House confirm their Palestinian origin, they are worked according to the technique used by the Nabataeans, a people bordering on the Jews, also widely used in Palestine. On the stones there are numerous graffiti similar to the Judeo-Christian ones of the II-V century found in the Holy Land, in particular in Nazareth. The sanctuary was built to protect theHoly House, on the initiative of the bishop of Recanati Nicolò delle Aste, in 1469 and was concluded in 1587.

Virgin of Loreto

Inside theHoly Housethere is the statue of the Virgin of Loreto, carved on the wood of a cedar from Lebanon in the Vatican Gardens, which replaces that of the century. XIV which was destroyed in a fire that broke out inHoly Housein 1921. It was sculpted by Pope Pius XI (1922-1939) who in 1922 crowned it in the Vatican and had it solemnly transported to Loreto. It was modeled by Enrico Quattrini and executed and painted by Leopoldo Celani. Since the sixteenth century she is covered with a mantle, said“dalmatic”.

Over 50 popes have gone on pilgrimage to Loreto and their devotion has always been great. The Popes Pius II (1458-1464) and Paul II (1464-1471) turned to the Virgin to miraculously recover from their serious illnesses.

Pope Benedict XV (1914-1922), in consideration of the translation of theHoly House, from Palestine to Loreto, proclaimed her the patroness of aviators.

Finally, we must remember the“Lauretan Litanies”which from the twelfth century have become a real oration to the Virgin, centered on the titles that have been bestowed on her in every age, even with biblical references. The“Lauretan Litanies”replaced in Christendom, the denominated ones“Venetian”(in use in the basilica of S. Marco and originating in Aquileia) and those"deprecatory"(i.e. of supplication, originating in Germany).
