The branch must choose between one thing and another:
either the vine or the fire

Wait

Before screw porti frutto, occorre aspettare e avere pazienza. C’è prima di tutto il tempo in cui la vite viene piantata: deve passare molto tempo prima che cresca, si deve irrobustire, c’è bisogno che qualcuno se ne prenda cura costantemente senza vedere al momento alcun risultato apparente.

The farmer must have not only a lot of patience, but also a lot of trust, not to mention everything that can intervene to make the growth of the vine more difficult, bad weather and accidents that are not predictable. Yet if we want to reap the fruit, we must necessarily wait.

Rush

Questo vale anche per le nostre relazioni, dalle quali usciamo forse troppo frettolosamente, spinti dalle nostre tempeste emotive, soprattutto quando intervengono le potature, quando siamo feriti e sfrondati. A noi sembra che stiamo morendo, ma in realtà è proprio quella potatura che ci permette di portare più frutto.

It is evident that this also happens in the relationship with God, because we are not always willing to wait for his time, we are not always happy with his way of acting. We also walk away from the relationship with him, we no longer trust him, we put him aside. Maybe we even stay at home with him, but we no longer speak to each other and we begin to feel like he is someone who oppresses us or who has disappointed us.

Stay

Parlando ai discepoli, Gesù insiste sul verbo rimanere, forse per dire che è questo il verbo dell’amore. Rimanere vuol dire dare all’altro un’altra possibilità, rimanere significa non fuggire lasciandosi travolgere dalla propria rabbia, rimanere significa provare a capire che cose è successo.

Perhaps it is not always possible to stay, because once the branch has broken, it is no longer possible to go back. It may happen that even in the relationship with God we decide to leave, but perhaps that is precisely the moment in which we begin to die, because life no longer reaches us, we dry up and the world will only use us to burn us. In fact, without the Lord we cannot do anything, indeed we become nothing.

Escapes

Questo invito di Gesù a rimanere è probabilmente anche un appello che egli rivolge ai discepoli: si prepara il tempo in cui Gesù si allontanerà dalla comunità, e allora bisognerà imparare a resistere e a restare nella relazione in un modo nuovo.

Arriveranno appunto le potature, la passione, l’ingiustizia, il dramma. Se i discepoli avranno il coraggio di rimanere, nonostante le potature, allora la loro vita fiorirà.

This invitation to stay probably also resonated in the Johannine community, perhaps in the time of persecution, due to which many Christians had preferred to leave, unable to face the ordeal of pain and suffering.

To trust

Rimanere significa fidarsi dell’agricoltore. Il tralcio non sa cosa sia meglio per lui. Se Gesù è la vite a cui rimanere attaccati, il Padre è l’agricoltore, è lui che sa dove mettere le mani e che cosa sia meglio per ogni tralcio.

Ecco perché rimanere significa fidarsi, lasciando che il Padre a volte intervenga anche con le potature.

At the moment it is difficult to understand them, but over time we will realize how they have helped us bear fruit.
