A young man with great aspirations

Small in stature, with an outgoing character, Francesco had always had in his heart the desire to accomplish great enterprises; this moved him when he was twenty he left, first for the war between Assisi and Perugia e poi per la crociata.

Son of the wealthy cloth merchant Pietro di Bernardone and of the Provençal noblewoman Pica, he was born in 1182 and grew up in the comforts of his family and worldly life. Returning from the hard war experience, sick and shaken, he appeared unrecognizable to everyone. Something, beyond the experience of the conflict, had deeply furrowed his mind.

A shocking encounter and the question: serve the servant or the Master?

He would never have forgotten the words he received in a dream in Spoleto: "Why do you bother looking for the servant instead of the Master?". His existence took a new path, driven by the constant desire to know what God called him.

Prayer and contemplation in the silence of the Umbrian countryside led him to embrace lepers and outcasts as brothers, towards whom he had always felt disgust and repulsion.

San Damiano. “Francis, go and repair my ruined church”

La voce udita a Spoleto tornò a irrompere nel silenzio dell’orazione davanti ad un crocifisso bizantino nella chiesetta abbandonata di San Damiano: “Francesco, va’ e ripara la mia chiesa, che come vedi cade tutta in rovina”.

Quel richiamo, dapprima inteso come un invito a ricostruire pietra su pietra il rudere della cappellina, negli anni svelerà al giovane il suo pieno significato.

Era chiamato a “cose grandi”: “rinnovare”, in spirito di obbedienza, la Church al suo tempo attraversata da divisioni ed eresie.

L’incontenibile gioia scaturita dal sentirsi amato e chiamato dal Father accrebbe nel giovane il desiderio di vivere di Provvidenza e, in ossequio al Vangelo, decise di cedere ogni bene ai poveri. Era ormai incolmabile il divario creatosi con papà Pietro di Bernardone.

The first community of friars. The Pope approves the Rule

Francesco was joined by numerous companions who, like him, wanted to live the Gospel alla lettera in povertà, castità e obbedienza.

In 1209 the first nucleus of "friars" went to Rome to see Pope Innocent III who, impressed by "that little young man with burning eyes", approved the Rule, then definitively confirmed in 1223 by Honorius III.

The Poor Clares and the Third Order

Attratta dal carisma di Francesco fu anche Chiara, una nobile di Assisi.

Francis welcomed her and started the second Franciscan order, "the poor ladies”, then notes how Poor Clares; so he founded a third order for the laity.

L’ardente love per Christ, espresso teneramente nella rappresentazione del primo presepe vivente a Greccio nel Natale 1223, portò il poverello a conformarsi a Jesus e a ricevere, primo santo nella storia, il sigillo delle stimmate.

“Giullare di God”, fu testimone della gioia della fede avvicinando al Vangelo anche i non credenti e catturando persino l’interesse del sultano che lo accolse con onore in Terra Santa.

The life of Francis, praise to the Creator

La vita di Francesco fu una costante lode al Creatore.

Il “Cantico di Frate Sole”, primo capolavoro poetico della letteratura italiana, scritto quando era ormai prostrato dalla malattia, è espressione della libertà di un’anima riconciliata con God in Christ.

A Jesus, il santo va incontro con gioia quando “sorella morte” lo viene a visitare: è la sera del 3 ottobre 1226.

The spirit of Assisi, inspirer of faith and fraternity

He died at the age of 44 on the bare earth of Portiuncula, luogo in cui ricevette in dono l’indulgenza del Perdono. La canonizzazione avvenne due anni dopo. Lo spirito di Francesco continua ad ispirare tanti nell’obbedienza alla Church, nella costruzione del dialogo tra tutti nella verità e nella carità e nella tutela del created.
