A just man

La prima definizione di Giuseppe che incontriamo nel vangelo di Matteo è “giusto”. Il promesso sposo di Maria, davanti all’inesplicabile gravidanza della sua fidanzata, non pensa al proprio orgoglio o alla propria dignità ferita: pensa invece a salvarla dalla cattiveria della gente, a salvarla dalla lapidazione a cui poteva essere condannata.

Non vuole ripudiarla pubblicamente, e pensa di licenziarla in segreto.

Ma subito, in quella comprensibile angoscia, in quella sofferenza, l’amore di Dio arriva a sollevarlo, un angelo viene a parlargli, ad ispirargli la scelta più giusta, che è sempre quella di non aver paura: “Non temere di prendere con te Maria, tua sposa, perché quel che è generato in lei viene dallo Spirito Santo. Essa partorirà un figlio e tu lo chiamerai Gesù” (Mt 1,20).

An obedient man

Un angelo accompagna Giuseppe nei momenti più difficili della sua vita, e l’atteggiamento di Giuseppe davanti alle parole del messaggero celeste è sempre di fiduciosa obbedienza: prende Maria come sua sposa e quando l’angelo, dopo la nascita di Gesù, torna ad avvertirlo del pericolo della persecuzione di Erode, fugge di notte con la sua famiglia in Egitto, un paese straniero, dove deve ricominciare tutto da capo, procurarsi nuovamente un lavoro (da Matteo, al capitolo 13, apprendiamo anche del suo mestiere d’artigiano, quando gli abitanti di Nazareth, scettici, si domandano: “Non è forse il figlio del carpentiere?”), riguadagnarsi la fiducia dei vicini.

E quando l’angelo torna ancora ad avvisarlo della morte di Erode e gli ingiunge di tornare nel paese d’Israele, prende con sé moglie e figlio e si rifugia in Galilea, a Nazareth, ancora su consiglio dell’angelo.

È indubbio che Giuseppe abbia amato Gesù con tutta la tenerezza che un padre ha per il proprio figlio: tutto ciò che Giuseppe fa è per proteggere ed educare questo misterioso bambino, obbediente e saggio, che gli è stato affidato. Educare Gesù: l’immensa sproporzione del compito di dire al Figlio di Dio ciò che è giusto e ciò che non lo è. Deve essere stato umanamente difficile, dopo averlo cercato angosciosamente per tre giorni, durante i quali, senza avvertire né lui né sua madre, Gesù era rimasto nel tempio a discutere con i dottori della legge, sentir dire a quel ragazzino dodicenne: “Non sapevate che io devo occuparmi delle cose del Padre mio?”

But perhaps it is the bewilderment that every father feels when he realizes that his children do not belong to him, and that their destiny is in God's hands.

Protector of the dying

Giuseppe non appare in nessuno dei quattro vangeli durante la vita pubblica di Gesù, né sul Calvario, né al momento della Resurrezione.

It can therefore be deduced that he died before Jesus began his preaching. According to tradition, Joseph would have died having Mary and Jesus beside him, and for this reason he is also invoked as protector of the dying, since we all pray to leave this earth having Jesus and his Mother beside him.

1. Today we celebrate the solemnity of Saint Joseph,Marriage of Mary(mt1.24;Lc1.27). The liturgy shows us how"father"of Jesus (Lc2,27.33.41.43.48), ready to carry out the divine designs, even when they escape human understanding. Through him,"son of David"(mt1.20;Lc 1,27), si sono compiute le Scritture e il Verbo Eterno si è fatto uomo, per opera dello Spirito Santo, nel seno della Vergine Maria. San Giuseppe viene definito nel Vangelo "right man"(mt 1,19), ed è per tutti i credenti modello di vita nella fede.

2. La parola "Right" evoca la sua rettitudine morale, il sincero attaccamento alla pratica della legge e l’atteggiamento di totale apertura alla volontà del Padre celeste.

4. Once the task is received, it executes it withdocile responsibility: listen promptly to the angel when it comes to marrying the Virgin of Nazareth (cfmt1, 18-25), in the flight into Egypt (cfmt2, 13-15) and in the return to Israel (cfibid. 2, 19-23). In pochi ma significativi tratti gli evangelisti lo descrivono come custode premuroso di Gesù, sposo attento e fedele, che esercita l’autorità familiare in un costante atteggiamento di servizio.
5. The Sacred Scriptures tell us nothing else about him, but in this silence the very style of his mission is enclosed: an existence lived in the grayness of everyday life, but with a sure faith in Providence.

3. Every day St. Joseph had to provide for the needs of the familywith hard manual labor. For this reason, the Church rightly points to him as the patron saint of workers.

Today's solemnity therefore constitutes a propitious occasion to also reflect on the importance of work in human existence, in the family and in the community.

Man is the subject and protagonist of the work and, in the light of this truth, it can be clearly perceivedthe fundamental link between person, work and society. Human activity - recalls the Second Vatican Council - derives from man and is ordered to man. According to God's plan and will, it must serve the true good of humanity and allow "to man as an individual or as a member of society to cultivate and implement his integral vocation” (cfGaudium et spes, 35).

To accomplish this task, one must be cultivated“proven spirituality of human work”anchored, firmly rooted, al"Gospel of Work"and believers are called to proclaim and bear witness to the Christian meaning of work in their various occupational activities (cfLaborem exercens, 26).

4. Saint Joseph, saint so great and so humble, be itexample a cui i lavoratori cristiani si ispirano, invocandolo in ogni circostanza. Al provvido custode della Santa Famiglia di Nazaret vorrei quest’oggi affidare i giovani che si preparano alla futura professione, i disoccupati e coloro che soffrono i disagi delle ristrettezze occupazionali, le famiglie e l’intero mondo del lavoro con le attese e le sfide, i problemi e le prospettive che lo contrassegnano.

Sotto la protezione di S. Giuseppe si sono posti Ordini e Congregazioni religiose, associazioni e pie unioni, sacerdoti e laici, dotti e ignoranti. Forse non tutti sanno che S. Giovanni XXIII, nel salire al soglio pontificio aveva accarezzato l’idea di farsi chiamare Giuseppe, tanta era la devozione che lo legava al santo falegname di Nazareth. Nessun pontefice aveva mai scelto questo nome, che in verità non appartiene alla tradizione della Chiesa, ma il "good dad"he would gladly have called himself Joseph I, if it had been possible, precisely because of the profound veneration he felt for this great saint.

"Any grace asked of St. Joseph will certainly be granted, whoever wants to believe must test it so that he is persuaded",claimed St. Teresa of Avila.“I took the glorious St. Joseph as my advocate and patron and recommended myself to him fervently. This father and protector of mine helped me in the needs I was in and in many more serious ones, in which my honor and the health of the soul was at stake. I saw that the help from him was always greater than what I could have hoped for…”(cf. chapter VI of the Autobiography).

Difficult to doubt it, if we think that of all the saints the humble carpenter of Nazareth is the one closest to Jesus and Mary: he was on earth, even more so in heaven. St. John Paul II confessed that he prayed to it every day. Pointing him to the devotion of the Christian people, in honor of him in 1989 he wrote the Apostolic ExhortationRedemptoris Custos (August 15, 1989)-whose reading is recommended, with a simple click on the link, to those who wish to deepen their knowledge of St. Joseph– adding his name to a long list of devoted predecessors: Blessed Pius IX, St. Pius X, Venerable Pius XII, St. John XXIII, Blessed Paul VI.
