READING OF THE DAY

From the book of Wisdom
Wis 2,1a.12–22

They say [the wicked] among themselves unreasoning:
«We set traps for the just, which is inconvenient for us
and opposes our actions;
he reproaches us for our faults against the law
and he accuses us of the transgressions against the education received.

Proclama di possedere la conoscenza di Dio
e chiama se stesso figlio del Signore.
It has become for us a condemnation of our thoughts;
it is unbearable to us just to see it,
because his life is not like that of others,
and quite different are its ways.

We were considered by him counterfeit money,
and keeps away from our ways as from things unclean.
He proclaims the final fate of the just blessed
e si vanta di avere Dio per padre.

Let's see if his words are true,
let us consider what will happen to him in the end.
Se infatti il giusto è figlio di Dio, egli verrà in suo aiuto
and will deliver him from the hands of his adversaries.

Let us test him with violence and torment,
to know his meekness
and test his spirit of endurance.
Let us condemn him to an infamous death,
for, according to his words, help will come to him."

They thought so, but they were wrong;
their malice blinded them.
Non conoscono i misteriosi segreti di Dio,
they expect no reward for righteousness
nor do they believe in a reward for a blameless life.

From the Gospel according to John
Jn 7,1-2.10.25-30

In quel tempo, Gesù se ne andava per la Galilea; infatti non voleva più percorrere la Giudea, perché i Giudei cercavano di ucciderlo.

In the meantime, the feast of the Jews, that of booths, was approaching. When his brothers went up for the party, he too went up: not openly, but almost secretly.

Some inhabitants of Jerusalem said: «Non è costui quello che cercano di uccidere? Ecco, egli parla liberamente, eppure non gli dicono nulla. I capi hanno forse riconosciuto davvero che egli è il Cristo? Ma costui sappiamo di dov’è; il Cristo invece, quando verrà, nessuno saprà di dove sia".

Gesù allora, mentre insegnava nel tempio, esclamò: «Sure, you know me and you know where I'm from. Yet I did not come of myself, but he who sent me is true, and you do not know him. I know him, because I come from him and he sent me".

So they tried to arrest him, but no one could get their hands on him, because his time had not yet come.

WORDS OF THE HOLY FATHER

Il Vangelo di oggi è chiaro, no?

Gesù si nascondeva, in questi ultimi giorni, perché ancora non era arrivata la sua ora; ma Lui conosceva quale sarebbe stato il suo fine, come sarebbe stato il suo fine. E Gesù è perseguitato dall’inizio: ricordiamo quando all’inizio della sua predicazione torna al suo paese, va alla sinagoga e predica; subito, dopo una grande ammirazione, incominciano: Ma questo noi sappiamo di dove è.

Questo è uno di noi. Ma con che autorità viene a insegnarci? Dove ha studiato?’. Lo squalificano! E’ lo stesso discorso, no? ‘Ma costui sappiamo di dove è! Il Cristo, invece, quando verrà nessuno saprà di dove sia!’.
