commentary on John 11:19-27, edited byMounira Abdelhamid Serra

The greatness of man lies in this: that he is aware of his own misery.

Blaise Pascal

I prepare

I close my eyes,
I focus on the present moment,
free your mind from worries and thoughts,
I internally express my desire to be in the presence of the Lord

I enter the text (Jn 11:19-27)

At that time, many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them for their brother. Martha therefore, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went to meet him; Maria, on the other hand, was sitting in her house. Martha said to Jesus: «Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died! But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give it to you». Jesus said to her: «Your brother will be resurrected». Martha answered him: «I know He will be resurrected in the resurrection on the last day». Jesus said to her: «I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, he will live; whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?». He replied: «Yes, O Lord, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who comes into the world".

I get inspired

Between the extreme misery that we feel in the face of death which characterizes the condition of the creature and the shining image of eternity inherent in the concept of God, the encounter with Jesus takes place, the human being, being a son, being a neighbor that is, close.

This meeting gives meaning to life by shifting attention from the end to the goal for which we live: becoming more human every day, remembering that we are all children and therefore brothers and sisters, becoming neighbors and neighbors.

Here the pain and fatigue of change, of non-acceptance of the end of a state and the beginning of a new one, the contrast of positions, their immobility become an opportunity for life, to seek and open ourselves to the faith that we carry in the heart, to the profound desire for which we are called by name.

I imagine

I try to visualize the scene, the place where it happens, the main characters, the words they exchange, the tone of voices, the gestures. And I let my feelings emerge, without censorship, without judgement.

I reflect on the questions

In what end did I discover a new purpose for me?

When did name calling bring me closer to someone?

What deep desire can I express as a child who, sure of being heard, turns to his parent?

I thank

As a friend does with a friend, I talk to the Lord about what I am receiving from him today…
I recite an “Our Father” to take my leave and leave the prayer.
