Read and listen to the Word of May 17, 2023

Wednesday of the sixth week of Easter

First Reading

Whom, without knowing him, you adore, I proclaim to you.

From the Acts of the Apostles
Acts 17,15.22-18.1

In those days, those who accompanied Paul took him as far as Athens and set off again with orders from Silas and Timòteo to join him as soon as possible.

Paul, standing in the middle of the Areopagus, said: «Athenians, I see that, in everything, you are very religious. In fact, passing by and observing your sacred monuments, I also found an altar with the inscription: “A un God unknown".

Well, the one whom, without knowing him, you adore, I announce to you.

He created from one all the nations of men, to dwell on all the face of the earth. For them he has established the order of times and the boundaries of their space for them to seek God, if ever, groping here and there like the blind, they come to find it, although it is not far from each of us. Indeed, in him we live, move and exist, as some of your poets have also said: "Because we too are his offspring".

Since therefore we are the offspring of God, we must not think that divinity is similar to gold, silver and stone, that it bears the imprint of human art and ingenuity. Now God, passing over the times of ignorance, orders men that everyone and everywhere convert, because he has set a day in which he will have to judge the world with justicethrough a man whom he has appointed, giving sure proof to all by raising him from the dead."

But some joined him and became believers: among them also Dionysius, a member of the Areopagus, a woman named Damaris and others with them.
After these events Paul left Athens and went to Corinth.

Word of God.

Responsorial Psalm
From Ps 148

R. The heavens and the earth are filled with your glory.

Praise the Lord from heaven,
praise him in the highest heaven.
Praise him, all his angels,
praise him, all his hosts. R.

The kings of the earth and all the peoples,
the rulers and judges of the earth,
the boys and girls,
old people together with children
praise the name of the Lord. R.

Because only his name is sublime:
his majesty dominates the earth and the heavens.
He has increased the power of his people.
He is praise to all his faithful,
for the sons of Israel, a people close to him. R.

Gospel acclamation

Hallelujah, hallelujah.

I will pray the Father and he will give you another Paraclete
to stay with you forever. (Jn 14:16)

Alleluia.

The Spirit of truth will guide you to all truth.

The Word of May 17, 2023 4

From the Gospel according to John
John 16:12-15

At that time, he said Jesus to his disciples:
«I still have many things to tell you, but for the moment you are not able to bear the weight of them.

When he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you into all the truth, because he will not speak of himself, but will tell you everything he hears and will announce to you future things.

He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and announce it to you. All that the Father owns is mine; that's why I said that he will take from what is mine and announce it to you.'

Word of the Lord.

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem (313-350)

bishop of Jerusalem and doctor of the Church

Baptismal catechesis n. 16.13 (transl. cb© evangelizo)

"The Spirit of truth will guide you into all the truth" (Jn 16:13)

The Holy Spirit, he, does not speak with a tongue, but a living person, he speaks with wisdom, then it is he himself who speaks and assists.

WORDS OF THE HOLY FATHER

The Holy Spirit, then, as he promises Jesus, guides us «to the whole truth» (Jn16.13); guides us not only to the meeting with Jesus, fullness of the Truth, but also guides us "into" the Truth, that is, it makes us enter into an ever deeper communion with Jesus, giving us the intelligence of the things of God.

And we cannot achieve this with our own strength. Self God it does not enlighten us internally, our Christian being will be superficial. The Tradition of Church affirms that the Spirit of truth acts in our hearts, arousing that "sense of faith" (sensus fidei) …

Let's try to ask ourselves: am I open to the action of the Holy Spirit, I pray to him to give me light, to make me more sensitive to the things of God?

This is a prayer that we must pray every day: "Holy Spirit, make my heart open to the Word of God, may my heart be open to the good, may my heart be open to the beauty of God everyday". (General audience, May 15, 2013)
