Read and listen to the Word of March 7, 2023
Summary
Tuesday of the second week of Lent
First Reading
Learn to do good, seek the justice.
From the book of the prophet Isaiah
Is 1,10.16-20
Hear the word of the Lord,
leaders of Sodom;
prestate orecchio all’insegnamento del nostro God,
people of Gomorrah!
"Wash yourselves, purify yourselves,
remove from my eyes the evil of your actions.
Stop doing evil,
learn to do good,
look for the justice,
help the oppressed,
yield justice to the orphan,
plead the widow's cause."
“Come on, let's talk
– says the Lord.
Even if your sins were like scarlet,
they will become white as snow.
If they were red like purple,
they will become like wool.
If you will be docile and listen,
you will eat the fruits of the earth.
But if you persist and rebel,
you will be devoured by the sword,
for the mouth of the Lord has spoken."
Word of God.
Responsorial Psalm
From Psalm 49 (50)
R. A chi cammina per la retta via mostrerò la salvezza di God.
Or:
R. Show us, Lord, the way to salvation.
I do not reproach you for your sacrifices,
your holocausts are always before me.
I will not take calves from your house
nor goats from your sheepfolds. R.
Why are you repeating my decrees
and you always have my alliance in your mouth,
you who hate discipline
and my words you put behind you? R.
Did you do this and I should shut up?
Maybe you thought I was like you!
I rebuke you: I place my accusation before you.
Whoever offers praise in sacrifice, he honors me;
to those who walk the straight path
mostrerò la salvezza di God. R.
Gospel acclamation
Praise and honor to you, Lord Jesus.
Deliver yourselves from all iniquities committed, says the Lord,
and form a new heart and a new spirit. (Cf. Ez 18,31a)
Praise and honor to you, Lord Jesus.
Gospel
They say and don't do.

From the Gospel according to Matthew
Mt 23,1-12
During that time, Jesus he addressed the crowd and his disciples, saying:
«The scribes and the Pharisees. Practice and observe all that they tell you, but do not act according to their works, for they say and do not.
In fact, they tie heavy and difficult to carry burdens and place them on people's shoulders, but they don't even want to move them with a finger.
All their works are made to be admired by people: they widen their phylacteries and lengthen their fringes; they welcome the places of honor in the banquets, the first seats in the synagogues, the greetings in the squares, as well as being called "rabbi" by the people.
But don't let yourself be called "rabbi", because only one is your Master and you are all brothers. And don't callfather” none of you on earth, because only one is the Father vostro, quello celeste. E non fatevi chiamare “guide”, perché uno solo è la vostra Guida, il Christ.
Whoever is greatest among you shall be your servant; but whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted."
Word of the Lord.
Saint Charles de Foucauld (1858-1916)
hermit and missionary in the Sahara
§ 79, psalm 40 (transl. cb© evangelizo)
"You have only one teacher and you are all brothers" (Mt 23:8)
“You only have one Father che è God: voi siete tutti fratelli”. Ce lo dici chiaramente, Mio Signore Jesus: tutti gli uomini formano una grande famiglia; tutti sono fratelli, God è il Father common: everyone must have for each other thoughts, words, gestures that a good father he wants his sons they have with each other. L'love that the best father wants to see reign among the sons, this is thelove that we owe to everyone, to every man, without exception.
And our model, Jesus, ce ne dà l’esempio: è God che viene sulla terra a mostrarci sotto forma umana come vuole che ognuno ami gli altri. Cosa fa Jesus?
He lives 34 years and gives his blood in the midst of the most terrible torments for the sanctification and salvation of all, not only of all in general but of each one in particular, so there is no one of whom it should not be said: this man, Jesus he died to save and sanctify it.
After the precept oflove brotherly, here is the example as he gave it Jesus. Come dice S. Paolo: “è vostro fratello, che Christ ha comprato a caro prezzo” (cf. 1Co 6,20).
Ogni uomo è vero fratello in God, e ogni uomo è stato amato e stimato così tanto da Jesus who died for him. Every man must appear to us as a brother, and as covered by a cloak of the Blood of Jesus.
WORDS OF THE HOLY FATHER
We disciples of Jesus we must not seek titles of honor, authority, or supremacy.
I tell you that it pains me personally to see people who psychologically live running after the vanity of honors. We, disciples of Jesus we must not do this, since there must be a simple and fraternal attitude between us.
We are all brothers and in no way should we overwhelm each other and look down on them. No. We are all brothers. If we have received any qualities from the Father celestial, we must put them at the service of the brothers, and not take advantage of them for our own satisfaction and personal interest.
We must not consider ourselves superior to others; modesty is essential for an existence that wants to conform to the teaching of Jesus, who is meek and lowly in heart and came not to be served but to serve. (Angelus November 5, 2017)
