First Reading

Your light will rise like the dawn.

From the book of the prophet Isaiah
Is 58,7-10

Thus says the Lord:
"Doesn't [the fast I want] consist in sharing bread with the hungry,
in bringing home the poor, the homeless,
in dressing someone you see naked,
without neglecting your relatives?

Then your light will rise like the dawn,
your wound will heal soon.
 Davanti a te camminerà la tua giustizia,
the glory of the Lord will follow you.

Then you will call and the Lord will answer you,
you will beg for help and he will say: "Here I am!".

If you will remove oppression from you,
finger pointing and ungodly speech,
if you open your heart to the hungry,
if you satisfy the afflicted heart,
then your light will shine in the darkness,
your darkness will be like noon."

1 Cor 2,1-5

Io, fratelli, quando venni tra voi, non mi presentai ad annunciarvi il mistero di God con l’eccellenza della parola o della sapienza. Io ritenni infatti di non sapere altro in mezzo a voi se non Jesus Christ, e Christ crocifisso.

Mi presentai a voi nella debolezza e con molto timore e trepidazione. La mia parola e la mia predicazione non si basarono su discorsi persuasivi di sapienza, ma sulla manifestazione dello Spirito e della sua potenza, perché la vostra fede non fosse fondata sulla sapienza umana, ma sulla potenza di God.

 In quel tempo, Jesus disse ai suoi discepoli:
«You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavour, with what will it be salted? It serves no purpose other than to be thrown away and trampled on by people.

You are the light of the world; A city that stands on a mountain cannot remain hidden, nor is a lamp lit to place it under a bushel, but on the candelabrum, and thus it sheds light on all who are in the house.

Così risplenda la vostra luce davanti agli uomini, perché vedano le vostre opere buone e rendano gloria al Father vostro che è nei cieli».

La fondazione della Church

“Let your light shine”

Equivale alla creazione del mondo la fondazione della Church: in lei, secondo l’espressione del profeta (cfr. Is 65,17), è stato creato un nuovo cielo – che è “la saldezza della vostra fede in Christ” (Col 2,5), come dice Paolo -, una terra nuova è fondata “imbevuta della pioggia che spesso cade su di essa” (Eb 6,7), è creato un altro uomo, rinnovato per la nascita dall’alto, a immagine del suo Creatore: la natura degli astri diviene tutt’altra, loro di cui è detto: “Voi siete la luce del mondo” (Mt 5,14) e: “… dovete splendere come astri nel mondo” (Fil 2,15), e come astri numerosi che salgono nel firmamento della fede.

Non sorprende che ci sia in questo nuovo mondo una moltitudine di astri contati e chiamati da God. E il Creatore di simili astri dice che il loro nome è scritto nei cieli – così comprendo la parola del demiurgo di questa nuova creazione: “I vostri nomi sono scritti nei cieli” (Lc 10,20).

The multitude of stars that the Word has created is not the only paradox of this new creation: there is also the number of created suns which illuminate the whole inhabited earth with the rays of their good works, as the Author of these suns says : "Let your light shine before men" (Mt 5:16) and : "Then the righteous will shine like the sun" (Mt 13:43).

Come l’uomo che osserva il mondo sensibile e che ha conosciuto la sapienza manifestata nella bontà delle sue realtà ne deduce, a partire da ciò che vede, la bellezza invisibile e la fonte di questa sapienza da cui proviene la natura degli esseri, così chi porta lo sguardo sul mondo nuovo della creazione della Church vi vede Colui che è e diviene tutto in tutti, e conduce la conoscenza, attraverso la via delle realtà finite e comprensibili, fino all’incomprensibile.

WORDS OF THE HOLY FATHER

È “sale” il discepolo che non ricerca il consenso e il plauso, ma si sforza di essere una presenza umile, costruttiva, nella fedeltà agli insegnamenti di Jesus che è venuto nel mondo non per essere servito, ma per servire. E di questo atteggiamento c’è tanto bisogno!

La seconda immagine che Jesus propone ai suoi discepoli è quella della luce: «Voi siete la luce del mondo». La luce disperde l’oscurità e consente di vedere. Jesus è la luce che ha fugato le tenebre, ma esse permangono ancora nel mondo e nelle singole persone.

È compito del cristiano disperderle facendo risplendere la luce di Christ e annunciando il suo Vangelo. Fare luce. Ma non è la mylight, it is lightdi Jesus: noi siamo strumenti perché la luce di Jesus arrivi a tutti. (Angelus, February 9, 2020)
