Il Signore God plasmò l’uomo con polvere del suolo e soffiò nelle sue narici un alito di vita e l’uomo divenne un essere vivente.

Poi il Signore God piantò un giardino in Eden, a oriente, e vi collocò l’uomo che aveva plasmato. Il Signore God fece germogliare dal suolo ogni sorta di alberi graditi alla vista e buoni da mangiare, e l’albero della vita in mezzo al giardino e l’albero della conoscenza del bene e del male.

Il serpente era il più astuto di tutti gli animali selvatici che God aveva fatto e disse alla donna: «È vero che God ha detto: “Non dovete mangiare di alcun albero del giardino”?». Rispose la donna al serpente: «Dei frutti degli alberi del giardino noi possiamo mangiare, ma del frutto dell’albero che sta in mezzo al giardino God ha detto: “Non dovete mangiarne e non lo dovete toccare, altrimenti morirete”».

Ma il serpente disse alla donna: «Non morirete affatto! Anzi, God sa che il giorno in cui voi ne mangiaste si aprirebbero i vostri occhi e sareste come God, conoscendo il bene e il male».

Then the woman saw that the tree was good to eat, pleasing to the eye, and desirable for acquiring wisdom; she took of her fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he also ate. Then the eyes of both were opened and they knew that they were naked; they intertwined fig leaves and made themselves sashes.

Second Reading

Where sin abounded, grace abounded all the more.From the letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Romans
Rom 5:12-19

Brethren, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, so death spread to all men, because all sinned.

Until the Law, in fact, there was sin in the world and, even if sin cannot be imputed when the Law is missing, death reigned from Adam until Moses even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who it is a figure of the one who was to come.

Ma il dono di grazia non è come la caduta: se infatti per la caduta di uno solo tutti morirono, molto di più la grazia di God, e il dono concesso in grazia del solo uomo Jesus Christ, si sono riversati in abbondanza su tutti. E nel caso del dono non è come nel caso di quel solo che ha peccato: il giudizio infatti viene da uno solo, ed è per la condanna, il dono di grazia invece da molte cadute, ed è per la giustificazione.

Infatti se per la caduta di uno solo la morte ha regnato a causa di quel solo uomo, molto di più quelli che ricevono l’abbondanza della grazia e del dono della justice regneranno nella vita per mezzo del solo Jesus Christ.
Therefore, just as through the transience of one man brought condemnation to all men, so also through the righteous deed of one man brought justification and life to all men.

For as by one man's disobedience all were made sinners, so also by one man's obedience all will be made righteous.

Mt 4,1-11

During that time, Jesus he was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, to be tempted by the devil.

Dopo aver digiunato quaranta giorni e quaranta notti, alla fine ebbe fame. Il tentatore gli si avvicinò e gli disse: «Se tu sei Son of God, di’ che queste pietre diventino pane». Ma egli rispose: «Sta scritto: “Non di solo pane vivrà l’uomo, ma di ogni parola che esce dalla bocca di God”».

Allora il diavolo lo portò nella città santa, lo pose sul punto più alto del tempio e gli disse: «Se tu sei Son of God, gèttati giù; sta scritto infatti: “Ai suoi angeli darà ordini a tuo riguardo ed essi ti porteranno sulle loro mani perché il tuo piede non inciampi in una pietra”». Jesus gli rispose: «Sta scritto anche: “Non metterai alla prova il Signore God tuo”».

Again the devil took him up a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory and said to him: "All these things I will give you if, falling down at my feet, you will worship me".

At that time Jesus gli rispose: «Vàttene, satana! Sta scritto infatti: “Il Signore, God tuo, adorerai: a lui solo renderai culto”».

Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and ministered to him.

Tips for not giving in to temptation

We read in history that a holy priest once met a Christian that he was in the constant anxiety of giving in to temptation. “Why are you so afraid? the priest told him.

Alas, father! gli rispose, ho paura di esser tentato, di soccombere e di morire. E continuò piangendo, ho motivo di temere, se tanti milioni di angeli sono caduti in cielo, se Adamo ed Eva nel paradiso terrestre sono stati vinti. (…) Gli rispose il santo sacerdote: Amico mio, non sai che il demonio è come un grosso cane all’attacco, abbaia e fa gran rumore; ma morde solo chi gli si avvicina troppo. Abbi fiducia in God, fuggi le occasioni del peccato, e non soccomberai.

Se Eva non avesse ascoltato il demonio, se fosse andata via appena lui le disse di trasgredire i comandamenti di God, non avrebbe peccato.

Quando sarai tentato, fuggi subito la tentazione e, se puoi, fatti devotamente il segno di croce, pensa al tormento che soffrono coloro che non hanno saputo resistere alla tentazione; alza gli occhi al cielo e vedrai la ricompensa di chi lotta; chiedi aiuto al tuo angelo custode, mettiti nelle braccia della Madre di God, che ti protegga; sta’ sicuro di vincere i nemici e li vedrai presto confusi.

Se soccombete, fratelli, ciò avviene solo se non vogliamo usare i mezzi che il buon God ci dà per combattere. Bisogna prima di tutto esser convinti che da soli non possiamo che perdere, mentre, con la piena fiducia in God, possiamo tutto.

WORDS OF THE HOLY FATHER

Jesus, facing these tests firsthand, overcomes the temptation three times to fully adhere to the project of the Father.

E ci indica i rimedi: la vita interiore, la fede in God, la certezza del suo love, la certezza che God ci ama, che è Father, and with this certainty we will overcome every temptation.

But there is one thing I would like to draw your attention to, an interesting thing. Jesus nel rispondere al tentatore non entra in dialogo, ma risponde alle tre sfide soltanto con la Parola di God.

Questo ci insegna che con il diavolo non si dialoga, non si deve dialogare, soltanto gli si risponde con la Parola di God. (Angelus, March 10, 2019)
