First Reading

Like an abandoned woman the Lord called you back.

From the book of the prophet Isaiah
Is 54,1-10

Rejoice, barren one who has not given birth,
burst into shouts of jubilation and joy,
you who have not experienced pain,
perché più numerosi sono i figli dell’abbandonata
che i figli della maritata, dice il Signore.
Expand the space of your tent,
spread the curtains of your home without saving,
lengthen the strings, strengthen your stakes,
for you will spread out to the right and to the left
and your descendants shall possess the nations,
it will populate the once deserted cities.

Don't worry, because you won't have to blush anymore;
do not be ashamed, for you will no longer be dishonored;
indeed, you will forget the shame of your youth
and you will no longer remember the dishonor of your widowhood.
Since your husband is your creator,
Lord of hosts is his name;
your redeemer is the Holy One of Israel,

Like an abandoned woman
and with an afflicted soul, the Lord called you back.
Is the woman who was married in her youth repudiated?
– dice il tuo God.
For a brief moment I abandoned you,
ma ti raccoglierò con immenso love.
In a fit of rage
I hid my face from you for a while;
but with everlasting affection
I took pity on you,
says your redeemer, the Lord.

Now it is for me as in the days of Noah,
when I swore I'd pour no more
the waters of Noah on the earth;
so now I swear not to get angry with you anymore
and not to threaten you anymore.
Even if the mountains shift and the hills totter,
my affection would not leave you,
nor would my covenant of peace falter,
says the Lord who uses mercy on you.

Luke 7:24-30

Quando gli inviati di Giovanni furono partiti, Jesus si mise a parlare di Giovanni alle folle:
“What did you go to see in the desert? A reed buffeted by the wind? So what did you go to see? A man dressed in luxury clothes? Behold, those who wear sumptuous clothes and live in luxury are in the palaces of kings. Well, what did you go to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, indeed, more than a prophet. He is the one of whom it is written:

“Behold, I send my messenger ahead of you, ahead of you he will prepare your way.”

Io vi dico: fra i nati da donna non vi è alcuno più grande di Giovanni, ma il più piccolo nel regno di God è più grande di lui.
Tutto il popolo che lo ascoltava, e anche i pubblicani, ricevendo il battesimo di Giovanni, hanno riconosciuto che God è giusto.

Ma i farisei e i dottori della Legge, non facendosi battezzare da lui, hanno reso vano il disegno di God su di loro».

"What did you go to see in the desert?" »

Occorre passare dal deserto e soggiornarvi per ricevere la grazia di God.

Là ci si vuota, là si caccia fuori da sé tutto ciò che non è God e si vuota totalmente questa piccola casa della propria anima per lasciare tutto il posto a God solo. Gli Ebrei sono passati dal deserto, Mosè vi ha vissuto prima di ricevere la sua missione, san Paolo, san Giovanni Crisostomo si sono anche loro preparati nel deserto. (…)

È un tempo di grazia, è un periodo attraverso il quale ogni anima che vuole fare frutti deve necessariamente passare. Essa ha bisogno di questo silenzio, di questo raccoglimento, di questo oblio di tutto il creato, in mezzo ai quali God stabilisce il suo regno e forma in essa lo spirito interiore: la vita intima con God, la conversazione dell’anima con God nella fede, la speranza e la carità.

Dopo, l’anima farà frutti, esattamente nella misura in cui l’uomo interiore sarà stato formato in essa (Ef 3,16). (…) Un uomo può dare soltanto quello che ha; e soltanto nella solitudine, nella vita da solo a solo con God, nel raccoglimento profondo dell’anima che dimentica tutto per vivere da sola, in unione con God, God si dona interamente a chi si dona, così, interamente a lui.

Datevi interamente a lui solo(…) ed egli si darà interamente a voi. (…) Guardate san Paolo, san Benedetto, san Patrizio, san Gregorio Magno, e tanti altri, che lungo tempo di raccoglimento e di silenzio hanno vissuto! Salite più in alto: guardate san Giovanni Battista, guardate Nostro Signore.

Our Lord didn't need it, but he wanted to leave us an example.

WORDS OF THE HOLY FATHER

Questa è stata la tappa più difficile di Giovanni, perché il Signore aveva uno stile che lui non aveva immaginato, a tal punto che nel carcere – perché era in carcere, in quel tempo – ha sofferto non solo il buio della cella, ma il buio nel suo cuore: ‘Ma, sarà questo? Non avrò sbagliato? Perché il Messia ha uno stile tanto alla hand…

Non si capisce…’. E siccome era uomo di God, chiede ai suoi discepoli di andare da Lui a domandare: ‘Ma, sei Tu davvero, o dobbiamo aspettare un altro?’ (…)

Anche è bello pensare la vocazione del cristiano così.

Un cristiano non annunzia se stesso, annunzia un altro, prepara il cammino a un altro: al Signore (…)

E un cristiano dev’essere un uomo che sappia abbassarsi perché il Signore cresca, nel cuore e nell’anima degli altri. (Omelia da Santa Martha, June 24, 2014)
