Mt 11,2-11
 
In quel tempo, Giovanni, che era in carcere, avendo sentito parlare delle opere del Christ, per mezzo dei suoi discepoli mandò a dirgli: «Sei tu colui che deve venire o dobbiamo aspettare un altro?». Jesus rispose loro: «Andate e riferite a Giovanni ciò che udite e vedete: I ciechi riacquistano la vista, gli zoppi camminano, i lebbrosi sono purificati, i sordi odono, i morti risuscitano, ai poveri è annunciato il Vangelo. E beato è colui che non trova in me motivo di scandalo!».

Mentre quelli se ne andavano, Jesus si mise a parlare di Giovanni alle folle: «Che cosa siete andati a vedere nel deserto? Una canna sbattuta dal vento? Allora, che cosa siete andati a vedere? Un uomo vestito con abiti di lusso? Ecco, quelli che vestono abiti di lusso stanno nei palazzi dei re!

“Among those born of women there has not arisen one greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than him”

Con devoto rispetto onoriamo la compassione di un God venuto a salvare il mondo, non a giudicarlo. Giovanni, precursore del Maestro, che ne ignorava il mistero, quando comprese che Jesus era veramente il Signore, gridò a coloro che venivano a farsi battezzare: “Razza di vipere!” (Mt 3,6), perché mi guardate con tanta insistenza?

Non sono io il Christ. Sono un servo, non il Maestro. Sono un semplice suddito, non il re. Sono una pecora, non il pastore. Sono un uomo, non God. Ho guarito la sterilità di mia madre venendo al mondo, non ho reso feconda la sua verginità; sono stato tratto dal basso, non sono disceso dall’alto. Ho sciolto la lingua di mio father (Lk 1:20), I have not displayed divine grace. (…)

I am very small, but after me comes the one who "passed ahead of me, because he was before me" (Jn 1:30). “It comes later, over time; but before it was in the inaccessible and inexpressible light of divinity. “He who comes after me is mightier than me and I am not even worthy to wear his sandals; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire” (Mt 3:11).

Io sono sottoposto; lui è libero. Io sono soggetto al peccato, lui distrugge il peccato. Io insegno la Legge; lui porta la luce della grazia. Io predico da schiavo, lui legifera da maestro. Io ho per letto la terra, lui i cieli. Io do il battesimo di penitenza, lui dà la grazia dell’adozione. “Vi battezzerà in Spirito santo e fuoco”. “Perché darmi onore? Non sono io il Christ".

WORDS OF THE HOLY FATHER

Chiediamo a Giovanni la grazia del coraggio apostolico di dire sempre le cose con verità, dell’love pastorale, di ricevere la gente col poco che può dare, il primo passo.

God farà l’altro. E anche la grazia di dubitare. Tante volte, forse alla fine della vita, si può uno chiedere: ‘Ma è vero tutto quello che io ho creduto o sono fantasie?’, la tentazione contro la fede, contro il Signore.
