Sir 48,1-4.9-11 (NV) [gr. 48,1-4.9-11b]

In those days, Elijah the prophet arose, like a fire;
his word burned like a torch.
He brought famine upon them
and zealously reduced them to a few.

and so he brought down the fire three times.

How glorious you made yourself, Elia, with your wonders!
And who can boast of being equal to you?
You were caught up in a whirlwind of fire,
in a chariot of horses of fire;
you were appointed to rebuke future times,
to appease anger before it flares up,
to bring back the heart of the father towards the son
and restore the tribes of Jacob.

Blessed are those who have seen you

Mt 17:10-13

Mentre scendevano dal monte, i discepoli domandarono a Jesus: «Perché dunque gli scribi dicono che prima deve venire Elìa?».

And he replied: «Yes, Elia will come and restore everything. But I tell you: Elia has already come and they did not recognize him; on the contrary, they did with him what they wanted. So also the Son of man will have to suffer because of them."

Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them about John the Baptist.

Discourse on the prophet Elijah the Tishbite

« He will be filled with the Holy Spirit…; he will walk before the Lord in the spirit and strength of Elijah" (Lk 1:17)

Chi ha ottenuto il potere di aprire e di chiudere il cielo, di trattenere o far venire la pioggia? (1R 17,1) Chi ha fatto perire, in uno zelo ardente, i profeti della vergogna a causa degli idoli meschini che veneravano? (1R 18,40) Chi ha visto God in un vento leggero? (1R 19,12) (…)

Tutto questo è accaduto solo ad Elia e allo Spirito che è in lui. Ora, potremmo parlare di fatti ancora più prodigiosi. (…) Elia, fino ad oggi, non ha nemmeno subìto la morte, ma è stato rapito in cielo (2R 2,1) e rimane imperituro; alcuni pensano che vive con gli angeli, avendone imitato l’incorruttibilità ed immaterialità con una vita pura. (…) E di fatto, Elia è apparso alla trasfigurazione del Figlio di God, lo ha visto a viso scoperto, stando faccia a faccia davanti a lui (Mt 17,3).

Alla fine dei tempi, quando verrà manifestata la salvezza di God, egli proclamerà prima degli altri la venuta di God e la indicherà agli altri, e con molti altri segni divini confermerà il giorno tenuto segreto. In quel giorno anche noi, se saremo pronti, speriamo di andare incontro a questo uomo ammirabile che ci prepara il cammino verso tale giorno.

Ci faccia entrare nelle dimore celesti, in Christ Jesus nostro Signore, al quale vanno la gloria e la potenza, ora e sempre, nei secoli dei secoli.

WORDS OF THE HOLY FATHER

Questa gente non aveva ascoltato i profeti e non ascoltava Jesus. È qualcosa di più di una semplice testardaggine, no, è di più, è la idolatria del proprio pensiero.

«Io la penso così, questo deve essere così e niente di più.» Questa gente aveva un pensiero unico e voleva imporre questo pensiero al Popolo di God. […] Ma anche oggi si deve pensare così e se tu non pensi così non sei moderno, non sei aperto.

O peggio, tante volte dicono alcuni governanti: «Ma, io chiedo un aiuto, un aiuto finanziario per questo.» – (E si sentono rispondere:) «Ma se tu vuoi questo aiuto, devi pensare così, devi fare questa legge, quell’altra, quell’altra.»

Anche oggi c’è la dittatura del pensiero unico e questa dittatura è la stessa di questa gente; prende le pietre per lapidare la libertà dei popoli, la libertà della gente, la libertà delle coscienze, il rapporto della gente con God. E oggi Jesus è crocifisso un’altra volta. (Santa Martha, April 10, 2014)
