XIV Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading

Behold, your humble king comes to you.

From the book of the prophet Zechariah
Zc 9,9-10

Thus says the Lord:
"Rejoice greatly, daughter of Zion,
rejoice, daughter of Jerusalem!

Behold, your king comes to you.
He is just and victorious,
humble, ride a donkey,
un puledro figlio d’asina.

He will make the war chariot disappear from Ephraim
and the horse from Jerusalem,
the war bow will be broken,
will proclaim peace to the nations,
his dominion will be from sea to sea
and from the River to the ends of the earth."

Parola di Dio.

Responsorial Psalm
From Ps 144 (145)

R. I will bless your name forever, Lord.

O Dio, mio re, voglio esaltarti
and bless your name forever and ever.
I want to bless you every day,
praise your name forever and ever. R.

Merciful and gracious is the Lord,
lento all’ira e grande nell’amore.
Good is the Lord to all,
his tenderness spreads over all creatures. R.

Praise you, Lord, all your works
and your faithful bless you.
Let them tell the glory of your kingdom
and speak of your might. R.

Faithful is the Lord in all his words
and good in all his works.
The Lord sustains those who falter
and raise up anyone who has fallen. R.

Second Reading

If by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

From the letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Romans
Rom 8:9.11-13

So then, brethren, we are indebted, not to the flesh, to live according to carnal lusts, for, if ye live according to the flesh, ye shall die. But if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

Parola di Dio.

Gospel acclamation

Hallelujah, hallelujah.

Ti rendo lode, Padre,
Lord of heaven and earth,
because to the little ones you have revealed the mysteries of the Kingdom. (Cf. Mt 11:25)

Alleluia.

The Gospel of July 9, 2023

I am meek and humble in heart.

La Parola del 9 luglio 2023
La Parola del 9 luglio 2023 7

From the Gospel according to Matthew
Mt 11:25-30

In quel tempo Gesù disse:

Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your life. For my yoke is easy and my weight is light."

Word of the Lord.

Saint Aelred of Rievaulx (1110-1167)

English Cistercian monk

The mirror of charity, I, 30-31 (trad. cb© evangelizo)

“You will find refreshment”

Those who complain about the harshness of the Lord's yoke may not have completely rejected the heavy yoke of the world's desires. (…)

Tell me, what is sweeter, what is more restful than no longer being agitated by the unruly impulses of the flesh (…)? Something so close to divine tranquility that we are no longer touched by the affronts that come our way, that we are not frightened by any torment or persecution, but that we retain the same calm in joy and in adversity, to see the enemy and the friend, to be like him “who makes his sun rise on the wicked and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust”? (Mt 5,45) All this is found in charity, and nothing outside of charity.

Likewise, it is in her that true tranquillity, true sweetness resides, since she is the Lord's yoke. If we accept the Lord's invitation, we will find refreshment for our souls, for "The Lord's yoke is easy and his load light." It is that “charity is patient, charity is kind; charity is not envious, it does not boast, it does not puff itself up, it does not disrespect, it does not seek his interests, it does not get angry, it does not take into account the evil received” (1Co 13,4-5).

The other virtues are for us like a vehicle for the tired man, or like food for the wayfarer, or a light for people lost in the darkness, or weapons for a fighter. But charity - which must be found in all virtues for them to be virtues - is by itself, in a special way, refreshment for the weary, home for the wayfarer, full light for those who arrive at the end and the perfect crown for those who bring back the victory.

WORDS OF THE HOLY FATHER

The Lord does not reserve this phrase for any of his friends, no, he addresses it to "all" those who are tired and oppressed by life.

And who can feel excluded from this invitation? Lord knows how heavy life can be. He knows that many things tire the heart: disappointments and wounds from the past, burdens to bear and wrongs to bear in the present, uncertainties and worries for the future.

(Angelus, July 9, 2017)
