This evening I will read you a new fairy tale by Gianni Rodari titled “The Wizard of the Comets”.

Once upon a time a wizard invented a machine for making comets.
It resembled the machine for cutting broth a little, but it was not the same and was used to manufacture comets at will, large or small, with a single or double tail, with yellow or red light.
The wizard toured villages and cities, never missed a market, also showed up at the Milan Fair and the horse fair in Verona, and everywhere he displayed his machine and explained how easy it was to operate.
The comets came out small, with a string to hold them, then as they rose higher they became the desired size, and even the largest ones were no more difficult to control than a kite. People crowded around the wizard, as they always crowd around those who show a machine at the market, to make the finest spaghetti or to peel potatoes, but they never bought even a small comet.
“If it were a balloon, maybe,” said a good woman. “But if I buy him a comet, who knows what trouble my child will cause.” And the wizard: “But cheer up! Your children will go to the stars, start getting them used to it when they are small.” “No, no thanks.
Someone else will go to the stars, surely not my son.” “Comets! Real comets! Who wants one?” But no one wanted them.
The poor wizard, from skipping meals, because he couldn’t get a single lira, was reduced to skin and bones. One evening, hungrier than usual, he transformed his comet-making machine into a Tuscan cheese wheel and ate it.
