Switty era una scimmietta che faceva sempre i capricci prima di andare a dormire. Quando arrivava sera, la mamma le diceva : “Switty, guarda il cielo fuori! E’ tutto buio, il sole è andato a dormire da un pezzo! Dobbiamo andare a dormire anche noi”.
Switty protested. “I don't want to go to bed! I always want to stay awake."
Switty faceva i capricci tutte le sere e il suo papà, la sua mamma, i nonni tutti la chiamavano “la scimmietta che voleva stare sempre sveglia”.
Ogni sera, Switty si addormentava sempre più tardi.

La mamma stava per perdere la pazienza con la sua cucciola e le diceva: “Se vai a letto così tardi, al mattino sarà difficile alzarsi”.
La scimmietta che voleva stare sempre sveglia, però, non credeva alla mamma.
Una sera, Switty decise: voleva stare sveglia tutta la notte, perché aveva troppa voglia di saltare, correre per la casa e inventare giochi nuovi.

La mamma le disse:

“Va bene, Switty, per questa sera facciamo come vuoi tu. Dal momento che non hai sonno, non dormire!”.
La scimmietta che voleva stare sempre sveglia era felicissima.

Prima saltò sul letto della sua camera, dopo andò sul lettone della mamma a fare le capriole, poi le venne in mente di correre un po’ tra la cucina, il corridoio e il bagno e fece una gara con il suo papà.

Dopo, le venne in mente di tirare fuori tutti i suoi giocattoli dell’armadio e di spargerli sul pavimento. Fece anche una lotta con i peluches: che confusione nella sua cameretta!
Mamma e papà avevano deciso di aspettare che Switty si stancasse da sola e non dissero nulla.
La scimmietta che voleva stare sempre sveglia giocò e giocò ancora.

Quando le si chiusero gli occhi era sdraiata sul pavimento, tra peluche e costruzioni. Mamma e papà la misero sul letto e andarono a dormire.
Il mattino dopo, il sole era già alto nel cielo, il papà si era alzato per andare al lavoro e Switty dormiva.
Switty slept all day: many friends rang the doorbell of the little monkey who always wanted to stay awake. First came Lod the rabbit who always ate carrots:

"Knock knock, can I come in and play with Switty?"
“Ciao Lod”, disse la mamma. Switty dorme ancora. “

After a while, Mot the cat arrived.

“Knock knock, can I come in and play with Switty?
“Ciao Mot”, disse la mamma. Switty dorme ancora.

The hours of the morning passed and the little monkey who always wanted to stay awake was still sleeping.
Conny the little dog also arrived:

"Knock knock, can I come in and play with Switty?"
“Ciao Conny”, disse la mamma. Switty dorme ancora.”

Tap, the mouse who loved cheese, also passed by, but after evening came, Switty's friends all had to go home to their mothers, to take a bath, go to dinner and finally sleep.
Sleepyhead Switty woke up at dinnertime that day.
“Where are my friends?” Switty said.
“Sono tutti a casa”, rispose la mamma.

“Look at the sky, Switty: it's almost sunset time, the sun is about to go to sleep and it's soon time for dinner. You woke up too late."
"No! It's not late and I'm Switty, the little monkey who always wanted to stay awake!".

protested the puppy.
“Switty”, spiegò la mamma, “mentre tu dormivi, i tuoi amici erano tutti svegli e volevano giocare con te. Ora tu sei sveglia e hai voglia di giocare, ma è sera, i tuoi amici sono andati a casa e tra un poco andranno a letto”.
“No!” protestò ancora Switty, che non voleva credere alla mamma.

But now she felt lonely and didn't understand: why was the sun going to sleep? Why was it evening again?
After dinner, the little monkey who always wanted to stay awake didn't want to play.

Era stata tutto il tempo da sola e si sentiva un po’ triste.

She was bored, but she wasn't sleepy: it was a real nuisance to be a little monkey who always wanted to stay awake!
A few days went by and Switty was sadder and sadder. Her friends didn't come to visit and she no longer knew when it was time to go to sleep.
“Mamma, mi aiuti ad addormentarmi?”, chiese la scimmietta.
Così la mamma iniziò a leggerle un libro, a cantarle una ninna nanna e piano piano la scimmietta che voleva stare sempre sveglia cambiò.

Dad had established a rule: we went to bed immediately after the stuffed animal fight.
After dinner, the father would say: "It's time for the stuffed animal fight!" and Switty was having a blast.
Dopo, il papà e Switty mettevano a posto i peluche, la mamma veniva a leggere una storia e Switty si addormentava.
When Switty learned to fall asleep early, her friends came back to see her and she was happy again.
She had become the little monkey who slept at night and played a lot during the day, like many others, in all the countries of the world.
