Biography
Dante Alighieri, also known as Durante degli Alighieri, was an Italian poet, writer, and politician of inestimable value, born in Florence between May 14 and June 13, 1265, and deceased in Ravenna on the night between September 13 and 14, 1321. His most famous work, the “Commedia,” later called “Divina” by Giovanni Boccaccio, is a masterpiece of world literature and significantly contributed to the definition of the Italian language. Dante was an exponent of the Dolce Stil Novo, a poetic movement that emphasized love and virtue, and his “Commedia” is an allegorical journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise, exploring themes of morality, ethics, and human salvation.
Dante’s life was intensely tied to the political events of his time. He was a member of the Council of One Hundred and a prior of Florence, but his political career was marked by exile from his native city due to internal struggles between the White and Black Guelph factions. During his exile, Dante wrote most of his literary work, reflecting deeply on themes of justice, politics, and philosophy. His criticism of the powerful figures of the time, including the Church, is evident in many parts of his work.
Dante married Gemma Donati, with whom he had four children, and his family life was complex and marked by the distance caused by his exile. Despite personal difficulties, he continued to pursue his studies and writing, leaving a cultural legacy that endures to this day. His tomb in Ravenna has become a place of pilgrimage for lovers of Italian literature and culture.
The figure of Dante Alighieri remains central to Italian and world culture. The Dante Alighieri Society, founded to promote the Italian language and culture worldwide, bears his name, as do numerous institutes of Dante studies that continue to explore and disseminate his work. His influence extends far beyond literature, touching on philosophy, theology, and politics, making him one of the giants of human thought.
