A merchant had done good business at the fair: he had sold all his wares and his bag era piena di monete d’oro e d’argento.
Siccome voleva mettersi in viaggio in modo da arrivare a casa prima che fosse notte, chiuse il denaro nella valigia, la caricò dietro la sella e montò a cavallo.
At midday he stopped in a town, and when it was time to leave, the groom said to him:
“Sir, your horse is missing a nail in its left rear shoe.”
“Well,” replied the merchant, “the iron will hold for the six leagues I have left to make. I'm in a hurry."
In the afternoon he dismounted to feed his horse some bread. The groom said to him:
“Sir, your horse has a bare left hind leg. You should take it to the blacksmith.”
"No, for the two leagues I have left to go, the horse will be able to walk as it is," replied the merchant. "I'm in a hurry."
He immediately reassembled and set off. But soon the horse began to limp, then to stumble and it was not long before he fell and broke a leg. The merchant was forced to leave the animal there, remove the suitcase, load it on his shoulder and walk home, where he arrived late at night.
"It's all that damned nail's fault," he said to himself. “It is the cause of all evil.”
Conclusion
When you're in a hurry, take your time!
