Friday within the Octave of Easter

First Reading

In no one else is there salvation.

From the Acts of the Apostles
Acts 4,1-12

In those days, Peter and John were speaking to the people, [after the healing of the lame man,] when the priests, the commander of the temple guards and the Sadducees came, irritated that they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.

They arrested them and put them in prison until the next day, since it was already evening. But many of those who had heard the Word believed, and the number of men reached about five thousand.

The next day their leaders, the elders and the scribes, the high priest Anna, Caiaphas, John, Alexander and all who belonged to families of high priests gathered in Jerusalem.

They brought them before them and began to question them: "By what power or in what name did you do this?"
Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: "Leaders of the people and elders, since today we are being asked about the benefit brought to a sick man, and that is by whom he has been saved, let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel: in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified and who God raised from the dead, he stands before you healed.

This Jesus it is the stone, which was rejected by you, the builders, and which has become the cornerstone. In no one else is there salvation; for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we are to be saved."

Jesus he came and took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish.

From the Gospel according to John
Jn 21:1-14

During that time, Jesus he manifested himself again to the disciples on the sea of Tiberias. And it manifested itself thus: Simon Peter, Thomas known as Didymus, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee and two other disciples. Simon Peter said to them, "I'm going fishing." They said to him, "We too are coming with you." So they went out and got into the boat; but that night they caught nothing.

When it was already dawn, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples had not noticed that it was Jesus. Jesus he said to them, "Children, have you nothing to eat?" They answered him, "No." So he said to them, "Cast the net on the right side of the boat and you will find."

They threw it and could no longer pull it up due to the large amount of fish. Then that disciple who Jesus loved said to Peter: "It is the Lord!" Simon Peter, as soon as he heard that he was the Lord, tightened his robe around his loins, for he was undressed, and threw himself into the sea.

The other disciples instead came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish: in fact they weren't far from the ground if not a hundred meters.
As soon as they went ashore, they saw a charcoal fire with fish on it and some bread. He told them Jesus: "Bring some of the fish you just caught."

Then Simon Peter got into the boat and drew ashore the net full of one hundred and fifty-three large fish. And although there were many, the net did not break. Jesus he said to them, "Come and eat." And none of the disciples dared to ask him: "Who are you?", because they knew well that it was the Lord. Jesus he came and took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish.

It was the third time that Jesus he manifested himself to the disciples after rising from the dead.

Hymn for Vespers of the Octave of Easter: Ad coenam agni providi

« When it was already dawn, Jesus appeared on the shore »

Invited to the marriage feast of the Lamb (Ap 19,9) And clad in a garment of light, We have just crossed the waters of the Red Sea (Ex 14) Let us sing Christhe paves the way for us.

His body clothed in glory sacrificed himself on the altar of the cross, shed his blood for the life of the world When we drink it, we live in his love. Protected on the evening of that Easter From the blows of the exterminating Angel (Ex 12,13) He snatched us all from slavery Then the waters opened under our steps. Today, our Easter is Christ (1 Cor 5.7)

He is the lamb sacrificed for our sins He gave us his flesh as food The most pure bread, the sincere unleavened bread. He is the truly worthy victim By means of whom hell has been annihilated, He liberates the whole earth enslaved And restores to it the goods of life.

Jesus Christ rises from the tomb And returns victorious from the underworld, Chains the tyrants, drives away the darkness And opens the gates of heaven for us. Glory to you, o Christ, our Savior You who triumph today among the dead Glory to Father and to the Spirit who enlightens us You who reign for everlasting ages. Amen, Hallelujah!

WORDS OF THE HOLY FATHER

In that exclamation: “It's the Lord!”, there is all the enthusiasm of the paschal faith, full of joy and amazement, which strongly contrasts with the bewilderment, the discouragement, the sense of impotence that had accumulated in the soul of the disciples.

The presence of Jesus resurrected transforms everything: darkness is conquered by light, useless work becomes fruitful and promising again, the sense of tiredness and abandonment gives way to a new impetus and to the certainty that He is with us.

Since then, these same feelings animate the Church, the Community of the Risen One. We are all the community of the Risen One! If at a superficial glance it may sometimes seem that the darkness of evil and the fatigue of daily living have the upper hand, the Church knows with certainty that on those who follow the Lord Jesus the light of Easter shines everlasting.

The great announcement of the Resurrection instills in the hearts of believers an intimate joy and an invincible hope.

Christ he has truly risen! (Regina Caeli, April 10, 2016)
