Dedication of the Peter and Paul Basilicas (optional memorial)

Dopo la Dedicazione della Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore (05 agosto) e quella della Basilica Lateranense (09 novembre), la Church celebra in un medesimo giorno la Dedicazione delle Basiliche dei SS. Pietro e Paolo a Roma.

These are the four basilicas that pilgrims must visit during the Jubilee years to acquire the plenary indulgence, which the Popes usually grant every 25 years. But, for those who cannot go to the magnificent and august Basilicas, there are many other possibilities and occasions to benefit from plenary indulgences [eg. the Papal Blessing"Urbi et Orbi"(to the city and to the world) nelle principali feste liturgiche, nel rispetto delle modalità definite dalla Church].

St. Peter's Basilica

After the martyrdom, which probably took place in the circus of Nero, the remains of St. Peter they had been buried along the opposite side of the via Cornelia and were later signaled for the veneration of the faithful with a small aedicule built by Pope Anacletus and which, until the third century, remained the center of the burials of the Popes.

Concessa la pace alla Church, Costantino fece edificare sulla tomba del principe degli Apostoli una basilica, che fu terminata da Costantino II e poi distrutta dai Saraceni nell’anno 806. Restaurata e totalmente modificata nel suo aspetto, la basilica esisteva ancora nel secolo XV, ma tanto aveva sofferto per l’assenza dei Papi, durante il soggiorno ad Avignone, che Papa Niccolò V (1447-1455) decise di demolirla e di ricostruirla sullo stesso posto.

Pope Julius II (1503-1513) entrusted the work to Bramante in 1505. After Bramante died, Michelangelo continued it and raised the imposing dome, which dominates the basilica and constitutes its main beauty.

Finally, on November 18, 1626, the basilica was finished and Pope Urban VIII (1623-1644) consecrated it. At the end of the Middle Ages the Popes had abandoned the Lateran palace and established themselves in the Vatican palace, bringing many solemnities to St. Peter's. The Ecumenical Council of 1870 made this replacement definitive and the Vatican basilica became, inevitably, the effective cathedral of the Popes.

The Basilica of S. Paolo

The body of the apostle St. Paul, from the place of martyrdom, near the Salvie waters, had been taken about two miles from Rome, on the Via Ostiense and there he had been buried. An oratory very similar to that of the Apostle Peter in the Vatican was first built on the burial site, also generally attributed to Pope Anacletus.

Costantino eresse sulla tomba una basilica, ma, essendo parsa di dimensioni troppo modeste, l’imperatore Valentiniano, nel 368, la sostituì con una basilica grandiosa a cinque navate. Teodosio proseguì l’opera e suo son, Onorio, la terminò. Le incursioni Saracene avvenute sotto san Leone IV (847-855) spinsero Papa Giovanni VIII (872-882) a circondare la basilica ed il convento, che già vi era sorto accanto, di mura e si ebbe così una fortezza che prese il nome di Giovannopoli.

La Basilica conservò il suo primitivo aspetto fino all’incendio che, nella notte tra il 15 e il 16 agosto del 1823, la distrusse. Pervennero, all’appello del Papa, offerte da tutta la cristianità, perfino da dissidenti e da infedeli e, il 5 ottobre 1840, Papa Gregorio XVI (1831-1846) poté consacrare il transetto e l’altare maggiore sotto il quale restò la tomba dell’apostolo.

Quattordici anni dopo, in occasione della definizione dell’Immacolato Concepimento di Maria (8 dicembre 1854), 185 cardinali, arcivescovi e vescovi assistevano, il 10 dicembre, alla dedicazione della nuova basilica di S. Paolo fatta dal Beato Pio IX (1846-1878) che ne fissò il ricordo alla data tradizionale del 18 novembre.
