Commentary on the Gospel of December 11, 2022 by Father Jean Paul Hernandez SJ
Are you the one to come or should we wait for another?
From the Gospel according to Matthew
At that time, John, who was in prison, having heard of the works of Christ, sent through his disciples to say to him: "Are you the one who is to come or should we expect another?" Jesus answered them: «Go and tell John what you hear and see: The blind regain their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are purified, the deaf hear, the dead are resurrected, the Gospel is proclaimed to the poor. And blessed is he who finds no cause for scandal in me!"
While they were leaving, Jesus began to speak about John to the crowds: «What did you go to see in the desert? A reed buffeted by the wind? So what did you go to see? A man dressed in luxury clothes? Behold, those who wear luxurious clothes are in the palaces of kings! Well, what did you go to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, indeed, more than a prophet.
He is the one of whom it is written: "Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way ahead of you."
Truly I say to you: among those born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist; but the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he."
Word of the Lord.
Padre Jean-Paul Hernandez SJ commenta il Vangelo della III Domenica di Avvento e illustra l’iconografia dell’Annunciazione.

John the Baptist represents that understanding which the enlightened of the people of Israel who had internalized the Holy Scripture could reach.
Historically, Jesus drew inspiration from the figure of the Baptist and from the movements that awaited redemption.
This is our mission: to go and tell those who still don't believe who Jesus is and that history is being made.
