Let's read the meditation “Called to live with who we are”

commentary on the Gospel of Mt 13,36-43, edited byLeonardo Vezzani SJ

To be perfect she only needed one flaw.

Karl Kraus

I prepare

I close my eyes,
I focus on the present moment,
free your mind from worries and thoughts,
I internally express my desire to be in the presence of the Lord

I enter the text (Mt 13:36-43)

At that time, Jesus dismissed the crowd and entered the house; his disciples approached him to say: «Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field». And he replied: «He who sows the good seed is the Son of man. The field is the world and the good seed are the children of the Kingdom.

The weeds are the children of the Evil One and the enemy who sowed them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the world and the reapers are the angels. Therefore, just as weeds are collected and burned in the fire, so will it be at the end of the world. The Son of Man will send his angels, who will gather out of his kingdom all those who sin and all those who commit iniquity and will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in their Father's kingdom. Whoever has ears, listen!".

I get inspired

We all know the word wheat and tares: in a field of good wheat, at night the enemy of the owner of the field secretly sows tares, a weed. Once grown, it is recognized by the farmers who propose to tear it up and leave space and nourishment for the grain. But the owner, knowing that the roots of the weeds are intertwined with those of the wheat precisely so as not to be torn up except to the detriment of the good plants, says to leave it alone: the moment of the harvest will come, and that will be the moment to separate what that is good from that that is bad.

Here we touch on what is perhaps one of the greatest temptations of our era, and which we experience in all aspects of our lives: that of tearing out the weeds. It's not that the workers are wrong, the best thing would be to remove all the discord. Why leave room for what is not good? Wouldn't it be better to eliminate it? The fact is that you can't.

Wouldn't it be better for us to eliminate all our defects, our addictions, our sins? Of course it would be better, and we often try really hard to do it. But you can't. Can not be done. Let's repeat it, because we don't believe this. We cannot eliminate the weeds from our lives. After all, aren't Instagram and Tiktok filters this? Looking for a perfection that doesn't exist? And in fact, once we turn off the phone, it is the mirror that reveals who we are.

We were fooled by those who told us that the life of every person and in particular of the Christian must be perfect. It is not true. This is the enemy who speaks to us, trying to present us with an image of the completely unattainable person of faith. When we then realize that we are unable to become perfect as we want, we become discouraged, we think it is our fault and we lose trust and hope in ourselves and in God. This is how the enemy wins: by making us people without trust and without hope.

We are called to live with who we are, carrying the beauty of our gifts and the weight of our imperfection, loved as only the Father loves us. This doesn't mean giving up, it means that every step of growth and improvement cannot truly be such if it doesn't start from a position of stability, where looking in the mirror I see a person I love. There is no longer a result to be achieved crushed by performance anxiety, but a path to be taken with serenity.

Let us ask the Lord for the grace to affectionately welcome that stranger who looks at me in the mirror.

Leonardo Vezzani SJ

I imagine

I try to visualize the scene, the place where it happens, the main characters, the words they exchange, the tone of voices, the gestures. And I let my feelings emerge, without censorship, without judgement.

I reflect on the questions

When by uprooting the weeds did I lose the harvest of my wheat?

What filter am I tempted to apply to my life?

Where in my life can I give up perfection today?

I thank

As a friend does with a friend, I talk to the Lord about what I am receiving from him today…
I recite a “Our father” to take my leave and leave the prayer.
